Does this sound familiar?

Reaching overhead feels painful or limited

Sleeping on one side is uncomfortable

Lifting, carrying or gym work aggravates it

Pain or stiffness keeps returning

How we assess shoulder pain

Listen and understand

Assess movement, strength and function

Explain your options and agree a plan

We ask how the pain started, what makes it better or worse, and how it affects sleep, work, lifting and activity.

We check shoulder and neck movement, strength and the tasks that matter to you. We may screen nearby areas or nerve symptoms when relevant.

We explain what the assessment suggests, discuss suitable treatment and rehabilitation, and tell you if medical review or another professional would be more appropriate.

The Initial MSK Assessment is the right first booking for new Sports Therapy clients.

A plan built around your goals

Your plan may include advice, changes to activity, graded movement, strength work and hands-on treatment where appropriate. It is shaped around the work, hobbies or daily tasks you want to do more comfortably.

When to seek urgent medical help

Contact NHS 111 for sudden or severe shoulder pain, an arm you cannot move, a shoulder that has changed shape or is badly swollen, lasting pins and needles or loss of feeling, pain after an injury, or if you feel feverish or unwell. Call 999 for shoulder or arm pain with chest pain, shortness of breath or pain spreading to the jaw.

Common questions

Usually not. Harrison will assess your shoulder first and explain whether a GP review, imaging or another professional may be appropriate.

Shoulder pain can follow a strain or injury, build gradually with repeated use, or involve the joint, tendons, muscles, neck or nerves. Different problems can feel similar, so Harrison starts with an assessment rather than guessing from symptoms alone.

No. Sports Therapy can help people whose pain affects work, sleep, caring responsibilities, everyday movement, exercise or sport.

It depends on the problem, how long it has been present and what you want to return to. After the assessment, Harrison will explain a sensible plan and review progress with you.

Wear comfortable clothing that lets you move and gives access to the shoulder area. If you are unsure, bring a vest or T-shirt.
